J&K: Retired Police Officer Shot Dead by Terrorists in Baramulla

Tensions escalate in Jammu and Kashmir as unidentified terrorists strike again, this time targeting a retired police officer, Mohd. Shafi, in Gantmulla, Baramulla district. The assailants opened fire while Shafi was offering prayers at a mosque, tragically resulting in his demise, according to Jammu and Kashmir Police.

This incident follows closely on the heels of an attack on two military vehicles in the Rajouri sector, where four soldiers lost their lives. The unrest prompts additional security measures, with the area cordoned off immediately after the attack on Shafi, as law enforcement agencies intensify efforts to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

The Kashmir Zone Police shared details of the incident on social media, stating, “#Terrorists fired upon Shri Mohd Shafi, a retired police officer at Gantmulla, Sheeri #Baramulla, while praying Azan in the mosque and succumbed to injuries. The area has been #cordoned off. Further details awaited.”

Simultaneously, an operation unfolds in the Bafliaz area of Poonch district, where additional security forces are deployed. The military is actively pursuing terrorists in the forested expanse of Dera ki Gali in the Rajouri sector, responding to the ambush that claimed soldiers’ lives just days ago.

The Indian Army, in an official statement, confirmed an ongoing inquiry into the deaths of three civilians in the Poonch-Rajouri sector during the terror attack on December 21. The army assured its commitment to providing full support and cooperation in the investigative process, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

As the region grapples with these successive incidents, concerns mount over the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir. The heightened state of alert underscores the need for swift and decisive actions to restore stability and protect the lives of civilians and security personnel alike. Authorities continue to monitor developments closely, prioritizing security measures to address the evolving challenges on multiple fronts.
