Sheikh Hasina on going Bangladesh poll: “Democracy should continue in this country”

As Bangladesh heads to the polls for the 2024 general elections, the Prime Minister emphasized the pivotal role of democracy in the country’s development. Stressing the significance of a democratic system from 2009 to 2023, she attributed Bangladesh’s achievements to this framework.

In the 12th national election, nearly 170 million voters will choose 299 lawmakers, despite a boycott by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Prime Minister Hasina expressed gratitude to the people for overcoming obstacles and exercising their voting rights in an atmosphere created by her government.

With over 42,000 polling stations, 119.6 million registered voters, and almost half being women, the elections are set to proceed. Anticipated to secure a fourth term, Prime Minister Hasina faces a 48-hour nationwide strike by the boycotting opposition.

The Supreme Court’s clearance on December 27 paved the way for the Election Commission to conduct the elections. With thorough arrangements in place, the Election Commission aims for a peaceful process, monitored by 127 foreign observers, including teams from the European Union and a Commonwealth team.
