With temperatures falling to 5.4 degrees Celsius on Friday, parts of the national capital and the territories around it awoke to a chilly morning under a heavy layer of fog. The bad weather made vision very difficult, thus operations at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport were temporarily suspended.
The visibility levels at IGI airport plummeted to zero on Friday morning, the authorities had to put Low Visibility Procedures into place. The weather was difficult, but there were no significant delays to the airport’s flight operations. Authorities at the Delhi airport, however, released a warning asking travelers to check in advance with their individual airlines for the most recent flight information before leaving for the airport.
In order to guarantee flight safety, the CAT III (Category III) instrument landing system (ILS) was developed to make aircraft landings easier in low visibility situations. Takeoffs and landings continued at Delhi Airport, but the thick fog could cause problems for flights that were not compatible with CAT III. In order to stay updated, passengers were advised to get in touch with their airlines for the most recent flight information.
“Low Visibility Procedures are in progress at Delhi Airport. All flight operations are presently normal. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information,” announced airport authorities, expressing regret for any inconvenience caused.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that visibility at Palam Airport was completely gone. Similarly, dense fog conditions were reported at Delhi’s Safdarjung Airport (VIDD), reducing visibility to 200 meters at the same time, according to the IMD.
As the city grapples with this weather phenomenon, travelers are advised to stay updated on their flight statuses, and airlines are working closely with airport authorities to minimize disruptions and ensure passenger safety during these challenging weather conditions.
