Swami Prasad Maurya resigns from Samajwadi Party and Legislative Council
Swami Prasad Maurya, who recently stepped down as the national general secretary of the Samajwadi Party (SP), further announced his resignation from the party membership and the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council on Tuesday.
In his resignation letters addressed to the Chairman of the State Legislative Council and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, Maurya cited moral grounds for his decision. He expressed that since he had resigned from the primary membership of the Samajwadi Party, it was morally imperative for him to also resign from the membership of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.
Addressing the Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, Maurya stated, “I have been elected as a member of the Legislative Council, Uttar Pradesh from the Assembly, Uttar Pradesh constituency, as a candidate of the Samajwadi Party. Since I have resigned from the primary membership of the Samajwadi Party, hence on the basis of morality, I am also resigning from the membership of the Legislative Council, Uttar Pradesh.”
In his letter to Akhilesh Yadav, Maurya expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work under his leadership but emphasized his resignation from the primary membership of the party. He referenced the lack of initiative taken regarding discussions held on February 12, 2024, and the subsequent letter sent on February 13, 2024.
Both letters were shared by Maurya on his social media account.
This development followed Maurya’s earlier resignation as the national general secretary of the Samajwadi Party on February 13. In his resignation letter to SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, he expressed his commitment to continue supporting the party’s growth despite stepping down from a formal position.
Maurya is slated to launch his own political outfit, the Rashtriya Shoshit Samaj Party, on February 22 at Talkatora Stadium, New Delhi.
The discord between Akhilesh Yadav and Swami Prasad Maurya intensified after Yadav’s remark suggesting that Maurya had joined the SP for personal benefits. Responding to this, Maurya criticized Yadav’s remarks and affirmed his prioritization of ideology over position.
When asked about the speculation surrounding the formation of a new party, Maurya deferred to the preferences of party workers.
Swami Prasad Maurya had joined the Akhilesh Yadav-led SP in January 2022 after leaving the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of that year’s assembly elections. His tenure with the SP has been marked by controversies, including provocative comments on sensitive issues such as Ramcharitmanas and Sanatan Dharma.
