Veer Savarkar, born on May 28, 1883, in Nashik, was a multifaceted personality—freedom fighter, politician, lawyer, and writer. Widely recognized for coining the term ‘Hindutva,’ Savarkar played a pivotal role in the ‘Hindu Mahasabha.’ His early involvement in the freedom movement began during high school, and he continued his activism while pursuing education at Fergusson College in Pune.
While studying law in the United Kingdom, Savarkar actively engaged with revolutionary groups such as India House and the Free India Society. Not only did he contribute significantly to the cause of independence, but he also authored books advocating revolutionary methods for achieving complete Indian autonomy.
Savarkar’s work, ‘The Indian War of Independence,’ focused on the 1857 ‘Sepoy Mutiny’ or the First War of Independence. However, the British colonial authorities banned this significant piece, underscoring the impact and controversy surrounding Savarkar’s contributions to the fight against British rule.
As India reflects on the death anniversary of this iconic figure, Veer Savarkar’s legacy continues to inspire generations, reminding the nation of the sacrifices and unwavering commitment of those who played a crucial role in shaping India’s destiny.
