Tamil superstar Vijay and renowned actor Kamal Haasan have voiced strong opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), branding it as “unacceptable” and accusing the government of divisive politics.

Vijay, who recently announced the formation of his political party, Tamizha Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), declared the CAA incompatible with the social harmony prevailing in the country. He urged the Tamil Nadu government to refrain from implementing the law in the state, citing concerns over its divisive nature.
Similarly, Kamal Haasan, the leader of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), criticized the timing of the CAA notification, alleging political motives behind its hasty implementation on the eve of elections. Haasan condemned attempts to polarize society for electoral gains and emphasized MNM’s staunch opposition to the law, stating that his party was the first to challenge the CAA’s constitutional validity in the Supreme Court.
Both Vijay and Haasan underscored their commitment to protecting the unity and diversity of India, rejecting any attempts to discriminate on the basis of religion, language, or caste. While Vijay’s TVK party has opted not to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, MNM is set to participate in alliance with the DMK.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Act grants citizenship to persecuted minorities from neighboring countries, excluding Muslims and Sri Lankan Tamil refugees, sparking debates over its constitutionality and its potential impact on communal harmony.
