After the announcement of the poll dates for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leadership, led by its president and Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies would secure all 14 seats in Assam.
During a significant meeting at the state BJP headquarters in Guwahati, Bora stated, “This is our first meeting following the election announcement. We’ve had extensive discussions with the BJP state committee office-bearers, covering various aspects including campaign strategies and future plans. We are optimistic about winning all 14 seats.”
Bora emphasized the collaborative effort between AGP and BJP in the upcoming campaign, marking their first visit to the state BJP headquarters post-election announcement.
Regarding the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) issue, which the opposition, especially Congress, has raised for this election, Bora dismissed its impact, asserting, “The people of Assam are now inclined towards the BJP and NDA.”
The 2024 Lok Sabha polls in Assam will occur in three phases: April 19, April 26, and May 7. BJP is contesting 11 seats, AGP in two (Barpeta and Dhubri), and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) in one (Kokrajhar), all part of the NDA coalition led by Himanta Biswa Sarma.
In the 2019 General Assembly elections, BJP contested ten seats, AGP three, and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) one. BJP emerged victorious in nine out of ten seats, while Congress and the All India United Democratic Front secured three seats each, with one won by independent candidate Naba Kumar Sarania.
