Following the resurfacing of an episode of the podcast Powerful Truth Angels featuring Lola Glaudini’s account of mistreatment by Johnny Depp on the set of Blow, the actor has issued a response. In a statement to a leading Hollywood website, a representative for Depp emphasized his commitment to fostering positive working relationships with cast and crew.
The representative stated that Depp’s recollection of the events greatly differs from Glaudini’s account. “Johnny always prioritizes good working relationships with cast and crew and this recounting differs greatly from the recollection of other members on set at the time,” said a rep for Depp in an official statement.
Glaudini recalled an incident during the filming of Blow where director Ted Demme instructed her to laugh while Depp delivered a monologue. According to Glaudini, this incident occurred on her first day on set, and she had not previously met Depp.
“I hear the cue, and I go haha, I do a big laugh or whatever,” said Glaudini adding, “Johnny Depp, when they say cut, walks over to me, comes up to me, sticks his finger in my face and he goes, ‘Who the f*** do you think you are? Who the f*** do you think you are? Shut the f*** up. I’m out here, and I’m trying to f***ing say my lines and you’re f***ing pulling focus. You f***ing idiot. Oh, now, oh now it’s not so funny? Now you can shut up? Now you can f***ing shut the fuck up? The quiet that you are right now, that’s how you f***ing stay.’”
She described feeling disheartened by the experience, particularly as it was her first major studio film after primarily working on independent projects. Despite her admiration for Depp, she felt he had confronted her aggressively. She remembered Depp later approaching her and offering what she perceived as a non-apology apology, attributing his behaviour to the challenges of maintaining a Boston accent for his character.
Reflecting on the encounter, Glaudini admitted to masking her emotions and agreeing that everything was fine, as per her father’s advice to not show vulnerability. Overall, the differing perspectives on the incident highlight the complexities of interpersonal dynamics on film sets.
