The inaugural match will feature a thrilling encounter between defending champions Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore (CSK vs RCB) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai, starting at 7:30 PM IST.
This opening fixture will witness the return of MS Dhoni, possibly for the final time in the yellow jersey, and Virat Kohli, who recently took a break ahead of India’s concluded international commitments against England in a five-match Test series. CSK aims to kick off their title defense with a victory, while RCB seeks to end their title drought, buoyed by their women’s team’s recent triumph in the WPL 2024.

During the initial phase, each team will play a minimum of three matches and a maximum of five matches. The playoffs format includes qualifiers, eliminators, and the final match:
Qualifier 1: The top two teams from the league stage will compete in Qualifier 1. The victor secures a spot in the IPL 2024 final, while the defeated team gets another opportunity in Qualifier 2.
Eliminator: The third and fourth-placed teams will battle in the Eliminator. The winner advances to Qualifier 2, facing the Qualifier 1 loser for a final berth. The eliminated team exits the tournament.
Qualifier 2: The Qualifier 1 loser squares off against the Eliminator winner. The victor earns the remaining spot in the IPL 2024 final.
The majority of IPL 2024 matches are scheduled to commence at 7:30 pm. On days featuring afternoon matches, the games will kick off at 3:30 pm. Audiences in India can catch the tournament action on Star Network TV channels. Alternatively, for those inclined towards online live-streaming, matches will be accessible via the JioCinema app and its website.
JioCinema will provide live coverage of the matches with commentary in 12 languages i.e. English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bhojpuri, Punjabi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Haryanvi.
The BCCI has unveiled the schedule for the initial phase, extending until April 7, comprising the first 21 matches. This decision was influenced by the impending general elections, which overlap with the latter half of IPL 2024. The governing body is diligently working on finalizing the schedule for the remaining matches, with an imminent announcement anticipated.
