Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a state visit to Bhutan on Friday, aiming to bolster the longstanding bilateral partnership between India and Bhutan. During his visit, PM Modi is scheduled to participate in various programs aimed at further enhancing cooperation between the two nations.
In a social media post on X platform, PM Modi expressed his anticipation for the visit, stating, “On the way to Bhutan, where I will be attending various programs aimed at further cementing the India-Bhutan partnership. I look forward to talks with Majesty the King of Bhutan, His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, and Prime Minister @tsheringtobgay.”
PM Modi’s departure to Bhutan had initially faced a delay due to adverse weather conditions, as confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday. However, new dates for the visit have been coordinated through diplomatic channels on both sides.
The relationship between India and Bhutan is characterized by mutual trust, goodwill, and understanding, with formal diplomatic ties established in 1968. The cornerstone of this relationship is the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation signed in 1949 and renewed in February 2007.
High-level exchanges have played a crucial role in nurturing the strong bond between the two countries. Notably, King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, has made several visits to India, emphasizing the close ties between the nations. PM Modi’s previous visit to Bhutan in August 2019 marked a significant milestone with the launch of major bilateral projects focusing on economic cooperation and connectivity.
The recent official visit of Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay of Bhutan to India in March 2024 further reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to enhancing bilateral relations across various domains, including development cooperation and robust economic ties.
PM Modi’s ongoing visit is expected to build upon these foundations and explore new avenues for collaboration, reflecting the enduring friendship between India and Bhutan.
