The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its fifth list of candidates for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections on Sunday, March 24. The list featured some prominent names, including actor Kangana Ranaut who will contest from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi constituency. Shortly after, an old tweet of Kangana from 2018 resurfaced on Reddit. In the tweet, Kangana had said she wanted to fight elections from a state with complex issues, not Himachal Pradesh, since it has a small population of only 60-70 lakhs and no poverty or crime.
Resharing Kangana’s three-year-old tweet on Sunday, a Reddit user pointed out her hypocrisy given that she is now contesting from Himachal Pradesh itself. In March 2021, Kangana had tweeted that she was offered to contest from Gwalior during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. She added that Himachal Pradesh’s population is hardly 60-70 lakhs with no poverty or crime. Kangana further said that if she enters politics, she would want to work in a state with complexities and challenges.
Kangana at the time stated, “I was given the option of Gwalior during 2019 Lok Sabha elections. HP (Himachal Pradesh) population is hardly 60/70 lakh, no poverty/crime. If I get into politics, I want a state with complexities I can work on and be the Queen I am in that field also. Small fry like you won’t understand big talks.”

Kangana was responding to a user who had predicted that the actor will contest by-election from Mandi Lok Sabha seat. On Sunday, after being named as the BJP candidate from Mandi, Kangana tweeted that she has always unconditionally supported the BJP. “My beloved Bharat and Bhartiya Janata’s own party, Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP) has always had my unconditional support, today the national leadership of BJP has announced me as their Lok Sabha candidate from my birthplace Himachal Pradesh, Mandi (constituency) I abide by the high command’s decision on contesting Lok Sabha polls. I feel honoured and elated to officially join the party. I look forward to be a worthy karyakarta (worker) and a reliable public servant. Thanks.”
