During an interaction with intellectuals in Gujarat’s Rajkot city, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed India’s prospects of attaining permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Jaishankar expressed confidence that India would eventually secure a permanent seat, citing the growing global sentiment in favor of India’s inclusion. However, he emphasized the necessity for relentless efforts to achieve this goal.
Jaishankar highlighted the historical context of the UNSC’s formation, where five nations – China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States – assumed permanent membership. Despite the increase in the number of independent countries globally over time, these five nations retained control, posing a challenge for other nations seeking a change in the status quo.
Acknowledging the ongoing efforts by India, Japan, Germany, and Egypt to propose reforms at the UN, Jaishankar stressed the importance of building pressure for substantive changes. He noted instances where the UN faced deadlock, underscoring the need for reforms to address contemporary global challenges effectively.
Regarding the case of Ariha Shah, a baby girl separated from her Indian parents in Germany, Jaishankar assured that the matter was being monitored closely. Expressing dissatisfaction with the child’s placement in foster care, Jaishankar affirmed ongoing efforts to resolve the issue through legal channels and diplomatic engagement.
Reflecting on India’s progress, Jaishankar highlighted the nation’s resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic, showcasing sustained economic growth and technological advancements. He underscored India’s potential as a driver of global growth and emphasized the international recognition of India’s achievements in various social sectors.
Jaishankar urged for a deeper understanding of India’s capabilities and responsibilities as a major global player. As the world looks to India for solutions to global challenges, Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to contributing positively to international affairs while striving for its rightful place on the world stage.
