The Delhi High Court has granted divorce to celebrity chef Kunal Kapur, known for his role as a judge on the television show “Master Chef”, citing cruelty inflicted upon him by his estranged wife.
In his plea, Kunal Kapur accused his wife of consistently disrespecting his parents and subjecting him to humiliation. The court found merit in his claims and highlighted that the conduct of the wife towards him lacked dignity and empathy, which are essential for a harmonious marital relationship.
The bench, comprising Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Neena Bansal Krishna, emphasized that making reckless, defamatory, and unsubstantiated allegations against a spouse in public constitutes cruelty. They remarked that such behavior tarnishes the sanctity of marriage and causes immense distress to the aggrieved party.
The couple tied the knot in April 2008 and welcomed a son in 2012. Despite efforts to reconcile differences, the relationship deteriorated due to irreconcilable conflicts.
While Kunal Kapur asserted his wife’s consistent disrespect towards his family and him, his wife denied the allegations, accusing him of fabricating stories to obtain a divorce.
The court acknowledged that conflicts are inherent in marriages but underscored that disrespect and inconsideration erode the foundation of the marital bond. It condemned the unsubstantiated claims made by the wife to tarnish Kunal Kapur’s reputation, affirming that such actions amount to cruelty.
The bench also commended Kunal Kapur’s professional achievements, noting his ascent as a celebrity chef within two years of marriage, as a testament to his hard work and determination.
The verdict reflects the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the integrity of marital relationships while ensuring justice and fairness for both parties involved.
