In a recent event, The Israeli military launched a strike on southern Lebanon resulting in the death of a senior field commander of the Hezbollah group on Monday, April 8. Despite the United Nations’ warning that the artillery bombardment was outspreading, and further, calling for the warring sides to halt the violence, the Israeli military and Hezbollah have been engaged in an exchange of fire across Lebanon’s southern frontier. This has taken place parallelly along with the ongoing war in Gaza which has raised fears of an escalation of the conflict across the Middle East.
According to statements from the Israeli army and two Lebanese security sources, Israeli fighter jets targeted the village of al-Sultaniyah, resulting in the death of a field commander from Hezbollah’s elite Radwan units along with two other individuals.
Further, as per the report by the Times of Israel, The IDF and the Israeli troops stated that the Hezbollah field commander, identified as Ali Ahmed Hassin, was responsible for planning and executing attacks against Israelis.
“As part of his role, he was responsible for the planning and execution of terror attacks in the Ramim Ridge area against the Israeli home front,” said the IDF.
A funeral notice for the Hezbollah field commander, Hassin has been issued by the authorities, however, Hezbollah did not specify any detail regarding the commander’s role. The Lebanese militant group described Hassin’s death as occurring “on the road to Jerusalem,” a term they use to refer to fighters killed in Israeli airstrikes.
Nearly 270 Hezbollah fighters, and around 50 civilians, including children, journalists, and medics have been victims of the Israeli strikes ever since the war between Israel and Hamas broke out.
On Monday, United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Joanna Wronecka and the commander of the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, Aroldo Lazaro, issued a joint statement emphasizing the imperative need to cease the violence.
“The unrelenting cycle of strikes and counterstrikes in breach of the cessation of hostilities constitute the most serious violation of Security Council Resolution 1701 since its adoption in 2006,” they said.
