Jannik Sinner, the current world number one and Australian Open champion, has withdrawn from the Paris Olympics 2024 due to a diagnosis of tonsillitis, the ATP announced on its official website.
Sinner took to social media platform X to express his disappointment at missing the Olympics, which he had targeted as a key goal for the season. “I am extremely sad and disappointed. Competing at the Olympic Games was one of my main goals for this season. I was really looking forward to being back at Roland Garros and playing for my country in this prestigious event. However, after seeing my doctors on Tuesday and waiting an extra day to see if my condition would improve, things unfortunately got worse,” Sinner wrote.

The Italian tennis star began experiencing symptoms of the illness on Monday after a week of practice in Monaco. Following medical advice, Sinner’s team recommended that he withdraw from the multi-sport event.
Sinner expressed hope for future Olympic participation and extended his best wishes to the Italian team. “As I said, this is upsetting for me and I hope to be able to play the Olympics in the future. I was looking forward to competing with my teammates and the rest of the Italian team, but for now, that will have to wait,” he stated. “As advised by my medical team, I will now take some time to rest and recover to full health. I’d like to wish the whole Italian team the best for this important event and hope to be back stronger in the future,” Sinner added.
This year, Sinner has maintained an impressive record with 42 wins and four losses, according to the ATP Win/Loss index. He has had a standout performance in Grand Slam events, winning the Australian Open in January by defeating Daniil Medvedev, reaching the semifinals of the French Open where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz, and advancing to the Wimbledon quarterfinals before losing to Medvedev. Additionally, Sinner captured titles at the Miami Open, Rotterdam Open, and Halle Open, with the Miami Open being an ATP Masters 1000 event.
The tennis events at the Paris Olympics are scheduled to take place from July 27 to August 4.
