Doctors Performed Lung Tumor Surgery From 5000 km Away, Watch Video

Do you remember the movie 3 Idiots? In the movie, we saw three engineers deliver a baby via video call instructions and a vacuum cleaner. But reality has taken an even more incredible leap!

Doctors in China have now performed the first remote lung cancer surgery from 5,000 kilometers away using a domestically-made 5G surgical robot.

This amazing achievement shows just how far medical technology has come, making what once seemed like movie magic a real-life miracle.

This achievement highlights the advancement of domestic surgical robot technology, allowing patients to receive high-quality medical care in their hometowns rather than traveling to major cities like Beijing and Shanghai, said Dr. Luo Qingquan from Shanghai Chest Hospital, the lead surgeon.

Shanghai Chest Hospital is the first in the country to perform robot-assisted chest surgeries and has conducted the largest number of such procedures nationwide. The hospital is also heavily involved in the research and development of robotic technology.

The remote surgery was based on extensive clinical research and development of domestically-made surgical robots. As part of the preparation, Dr. Luo’s team conducted the nation’s first intra-city remote robotic surgery on an animal in March to ensure its safety and feasibility.

After a year of preparation, the surgery was finally performed. Dr. Luo operated the system in Shanghai, with doctors in Xinjiang assisting. They coordinated smoothly as if they were in the same operating room, completing the procedure within an hour.

“The success of this surgery marks a significant milestone in demonstrating the clinical capabilities of domestically-made surgical robots, which can greatly benefit patients, especially those in remote and rural areas,” said Dr. Luo.
