Paris Olympics 2024: Vinesh Phogat Requests To Be Awarded With Silver Medal, Here’s When She Will Get The Verdict

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat has appealed her disqualification from the wrestling final at the 2024 Paris Olympics to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS). This appeal follows her exclusion from the women’s 50kg category final due to missing her weight by just 100 grams.

Vinesh, who secured a 5-0 victory in her semi-final match, was the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is an independent institution founded in 1984 to resolve sports-related disputes through arbitration or mediation. It is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland, with additional courts in New York City and Sydney, and temporary courts established in Olympic host cities.

CAS operates independently of any sports organization and is under the administrative and financial authority of the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS). CAS arbitrates legal disputes in sports, issuing arbitral awards with the same enforceability as court judgments. It also provides mediation services to help parties reach amicable resolutions.

Arbitration panels usually consist of three arbitrators: one chosen by each party and a third selected by the President of the relevant division. In some instances, a sole arbitrator may be appointed.

CAS has the final authority in many sports disputes, with appeals possible to the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland under certain conditions. CAS plays a vital role in the international sports community, offering a specialized and efficient forum for resolving sports-related disputes.
