Indian Men’s Hockey Team Bags Bronze, 4th Medal To India: Paris Olympics 2024

Harmanpreet Singh led the Indian men’s hockey team to a bronze medal with a 2-1 win over Spain at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium on August 8, 2024, during the Paris Olympics.

It was a special farewell for goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who played his final international match. After losing to Germany in the semifinals, India bounced back to secure back-to-back Olympic bronze medals, following their third-place finish in Tokyo.

Harmanpreet Singh scored both goals for India, ending the tournament as the top scorer for his team with ten goals.

The first quarter was intense but goalless, with both teams struggling to break through. Spain took a 1-0 lead in the second quarter when Marc Miralles converted a penalty stroke. India had a chance to equalize but Amit Rohidas’s penalty corner was blocked. However, Harmanpreet scored from another penalty corner just before halftime, making it 1-1.

In the third quarter, Harmanpreet scored again, this time from a penalty corner, giving India a 2-1 lead. The final quarter was dramatic, with Spain earning two penalty corners in the closing moments. But Sreejesh made key saves to secure the victory for India.

Earlier, India missed out on the gold medal match after a 2-3 loss to Germany in the semifinals. Despite goals from Harmanpreet and Sukhjeet Singh, Germany scored a late goal to win and advance to the final. India then moved on to the bronze medal match for the second consecutive Olympics.

In the group stage, India finished second with three wins and a draw from five matches. In the quarterfinals, they defeated Great Britain in a thrilling penalty shootout despite playing with just ten men.
