Wayanad Landslides: PM Modi Chairs Review Meeting To Address Crisis

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a review meeting on Saturday after conducting both an aerial and on-the-ground survey of the affected sites in Wayanad. Over 300 people lost their lives when massive landslides struck Chooralmala and Mundakkai in Wayanad on July 30.

The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Governor Arif Muhammed Khan, Union Minister Suresh Gopi, State Ministers A. Rajan, A.K. Saseendran, P.A. Mohammed Riyas, and Kerala ADGP (Law and Order) M.R. Ajith Kumar.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister assured full support to the state and survivors in their rehabilitation efforts. He emphasized that the central government would make every effort to fulfill the state government’s requests.

PM Modi noted that upon learning about the landslides in Wayanad, a Minister of State was dispatched to assess the situation, and teams from the NDRF, Army, and Air Force were deployed for rescue and relief operations. He expressed his heavy heart upon visiting the landslide-hit sites and meeting survivors at the relief camp, underscoring the importance of collective efforts in the rehabilitation process.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi visited a relief camp and interacted with survivors of the landslides in Wayanad. The Prime Minister, accompanied by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Governor Arif Muhammed Khan, and Union Minister Suresh Gopi, conducted an aerial survey of the affected areas before physically visiting the disaster sites to review relief and rehabilitation efforts.

As he reviewed the affected sites, PM Modi was briefed on the situation by Kerala ADGP M.R. Ajith Kumar. The Prime Minister is expected to chair a further review meeting with the Chief Minister and other officials later in the day.

The state has requested that the central government declare the situation a national disaster and a severe calamity. An Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) has been constituted by the central government to visit the affected areas from August 8 to August 10 to review the situation.

The Kerala government has assured immediate assistance to those affected by the landslides, including help with relocation. An adult member from families who have lost their livelihood will receive a daily allowance of ₹300, with this benefit available for up to two individuals per family.
