West Bengal’s capital, Kolkata, is under choas over a horrifying rape and murder case witnessed in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College. Bengal Chief Minister has assured justice for the crime and said that the accused will be hanged to death if needed.
In the tragic incident, the post-graduate trainee doctor’s body was found in a seminar hall at the hospital on Friday morning (August 9). Colleagues reported that she had gone to the hall to rest after a meal. The crime is believed to have occurred between 3 am and 6 am.
The Autopsy Report:
The preliminary autopsy report suggests that the victim was sexually assaulted prior to being murdered.
The four-page report details ten injuries on her body, extending from her eyes to her ankles, including bleeding from her private areas, eyes, mouth, and various other parts of her body.
Injuries were observed on her face, neck, abdomen, left leg, right hand, ring finger, and lips.
The report noted, “There was bleeding from both her eyes and mouth, with injuries on her face and nails. The victim also experienced bleeding from her private areas and had injuries to her abdomen, left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger, and lips.”
According to a senior police official quoted by PTI, the victim’s neck bone was found fractured. “It appears she was initially strangled and then smothered to death. We are awaiting the full autopsy report, which will aid in identifying the perpetrators,” he added.
Who Is Sanjay Roy?
But what do we know about the accused? How was he arrested?
Sources reveal that Roy joined the Kolkata Police’s Disaster Management Group as a civic volunteer in 2019 and later transferred to the Kolkata Police’s Welfare Cell through official channels.
Roy was frequently assigned to the police outpost at RG Kar Hospital, sometimes for extended periods, which gave him easy access to various departments within the hospital.
According to Roy’s neighbors, he had been married four times; three of his previous marriages ended due to misconduct, and his fourth wife passed away from cancer last year. Neighbors noted that Roy often returned home late at night in an intoxicated state. One of his former wives reported to the media that Roy was violent toward women.
CCTV footage from the hospital showed Roy entering the building around 4 am on Friday wearing a Bluetooth device around his neck. The device was missing when he left the building 40 minutes later, and investigations revealed that it was discarded near the crime scene, potentially serving as a key piece of evidence against him.
Following his arrest, authorities discovered that Roy had been drinking alcohol before the crime, according to an India Today report. Sources close to the investigation indicated that Roy had gone behind the hospital around 11 pm to drink and watch pornography.
“During the investigation, police found numerous violent pornographic videos on Sanjay Roy’s mobile phone. His phone was nearly full of such videos, suggesting he may be either mentally disturbed or a pervert,” sources told India Today.
