The tragic rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College has sent shockwaves across the nation, placing immense pressure on the Bengal government and police to resolve the case swiftly. As the investigation continues, City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal addressed questions about the possibility of multiple individuals being involved in this heinous crime.
Commissioner Goyal emphasized that it is too early to determine if more people were involved, stating that such conclusions can only be drawn once the investigation is complete. “Currently, our focus is on the ongoing probe. We have one suspect, Sanjoy Roy, in custody and are examining any potential connections others might have to the crime,” Goyal explained.
In an effort to gather information, the police have established a helpline where doctors can report any suspicions anonymously. “We are reaching out to everyone connected to the case, and those who haven’t yet been contacted will be. We are also in close communication with the victim’s family and will update them on our progress,” he added.
Goyal expressed confidence that if additional suspects are involved, they will likely be apprehended within the next four to five days. However, he assured that if the family remains unsatisfied with the progress, further actions will be taken as necessary.
The 32-year-old victim’s body was discovered in a seminar hall of the government hospital on Thursday night. The initial autopsy revealed severe injuries, including bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts, as well as wounds on her left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger, and lips.

Sanjoy Roy, the primary suspect, was not an employee of the hospital but was known to frequent the campus. Roy, who worked as a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, is a contractual worker involved in various duties such as traffic management and disaster response. Unlike regular police officers, civic volunteers receive a monthly stipend of around ₹12,000 and lack the benefits provided to permanent staff.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has promised that the investigation will be completed by next Sunday. Should the police fail to meet this deadline, the case will be referred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), as assured by Banerjee. On RG Kar Medical College and Hospital incident, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee says, “I want the Police to arrest the accused as early as possible. If the Police are unable to solve this case by Sunday, then we will not keep this case in our hands, we will hand it over to CBI…”
