A man was killed and another was injured early Monday morning at Mumbai’s Versova beach when a speeding SUV ran over them while they were sleeping, according to the police.
Ganesh Yadav, 36, a rickshaw driver, and his friend Bablu Srivastava had been sleeping on the beach to escape the heat when the accident occurred. Bablu was awakened by a loud noise and saw the white SUV running over Ganesh. The occupants of the vehicle got out to check on Ganesh but fled the scene when they realized the gravity of the situation.
The victims were taken to Cooper Hospital, where Ganesh succumbed to his injuries.
Police have filed charges against the driver, Nikhil Jawle, 34, and his companion, Shubham Dongre, 33, for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. They were arrested and later presented in court, which remanded them to five days in judicial custody. Their blood samples have been sent for testing to determine if they were under the influence of alcohol.
This incident follows a similar case in July, where a woman was killed and her husband injured in Worli when a luxury BMW crashed into their two-wheeler.
