The parents of the 31-year-old doctor who was raped and murdered at a government hospital in Kolkata informed the Calcutta High Court that a substantial amount of semen was found in her body, indicating the possibility of gangrape.
This revelation led to the case being handed over to the CBI for investigation, as the incident has shocked the nation. In their petition, the parents highlighted that the postmortem report clearly stated the cause of death as strangulation and provided unmistakable evidence of sexual assault.
“Petitioners state that the post-mortem report provided devastating details that confirmed their worst fears. Their daughter’s body bore several injury marks, indicating a brutal and violent attack,” said the petition, accessed by NDTV.
Multiple areas of the victim’s head exhibited signs of trauma. “Both ears exhibited signs of injury, suggesting a violent struggle. Her lips were injured, indicating that she may have been silenced or gagged during the attack,” the petition added.

The petition also mentioned that bite marks were discovered on her neck, emphasizing the severity of the assault.
It further stated that the autopsy revealed 150 mg of semen in the victim’s body, “a quantity suggesting involvement of more than one individual, further corroborated the suspicion of gang rape.”
Before the case was handed over to the CBI, state police had arrested Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer who was a regular at the hospital.
“No step taken to arrest any other offenders while the evidence clearly indicates that their daughter was the victim of a gang rape and murder, a crime that could not have been committed by one person alone,” the parents’ petition said.
The parents also emphasized that the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, along with other stakeholders responsible for the victim’s safety on the premises, have not yet been apprehended.
In its order to transfer the investigation to the CBI, the high court strongly criticized the hospital administration, particularly its former principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh. The court questioned why the hospital authorities failed to file a police complaint after the doctor was found dead. It also criticized the state government for appointing Dr. Ghosh as the principal of another medical college just hours after he resigned from his position at RG Kar Medical College.
In their petition, the victim’s parents have also said “they have come to learn through reliable sources that evidence exists on record suggesting that at least three individuals were involved in the strangulation of their daughter”. “The significant amount of semen found in her body further supports the involvement of multiple perpetrators,” they told the court.
They claimed that the autopsy was conducted hastily. In their petition, they stated, “Improper autopsy was done with a view to shield the others involved in their daughter’s death.”
State’s remarks
The state government’s counsel informed the high court yesterday that the victim’s inquest was carried out in the presence of a Judicial Magistrate and two female doctors. The state counsel also noted that the victim’s mother signed the inquest report. According to the state police, they had provided the post-mortem report to the victim’s family.
Police officers further stated that the postmortem was conducted in the presence of a Judicial Magistrate and was fully videographed to prevent any allegations of foul play. They added that a copy of the postmortem report was shared with the family to address their concerns.
CBI
After the Calcutta High Court’s order yesterday, CBI officials have assumed control of the case, and the accused, Sanjoy Roy, is now in the central agency’s custody. The CBI team, which includes medical and forensic experts, is divided into three groups. One group will visit the seminar hall where the doctor’s body was discovered, another will escort the accused to court to request custody, and the third will coordinate with Kolkata Police officers who were previously investigating the case.
