As Russia-Ukraine continues to intensify, recently, Russian-held positions in the occupied Kharkiv region came under intense fire from Ukrainian drones dropping thermite incendiary bombs, which set trees ablaze and reportedly damaged some Russian military vehicles.

Footage of the ‘Dragon Drone’ spewing fire has circulated widely on Telegram. In an undated video shared by the Telegram channel Khorne Group, it showed a low-flying drone releasing thermite—a mixture of aluminum powder and iron oxide that burns at extremely high temperatures.

Reportedly, this molten metal rapidly incinerates trees, fortifications, and metal objects, rendering military equipment and armor ineffective.

Meanwhile, the 60th Mechanized Brigade of Ukraine released drone footage of these thermite attacks, saying “Strike Drones are our wings of vengeance, bringing fire straight from the sky! They become a real threat to the enemy, burning his positions with an accuracy that no other weapon can achieve. When our “Vidar” works – the Russian woman will never sleep.”

These types of bombs are designed to cause fires. However, it raises concerns about their potential impact on civilian areas and infrastructure.

Dr. Iain Overton, Executive Director of Action on Armed Violence (AOAV), a British advocacy group, warning about its use said,

“The increasing use of thermite bombs raises the risk of these weapons being used in civilian areas. The potential consequences could be catastrophic, leading to severe injuries and loss of life among non-combatants.”

Earlier in 2023, Russia deployed thermite bombs over the eastern Ukrainian town of Vuhledar following a defeat in a tank battle.

Reportedly, Russian forces also used 122mm Grad 9M22S rockets with thermite warheads launched from Soviet-era B-21 multi-rocket systems.

Additionally as per numerous videos, both Russian & Ukrainian troops employed such weapons at the front lines.
