BPR: India’s Rail Electrification Rollout Hit The 97% Mark

Indian Railways is rapidly nearing its goal of achieving 100% electrification of Broad Gauge railway lines, with 97% of the network already electrified. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the transformative progress in a recent Lok Sabha session, underscoring the mission-driven pace that has electrified approximately 45,200 route kilometers since 2014-15.

Electrification Milestones

The electrification rate has surged from a modest 1.42 kilometers per day (2004-2014) to an impressive 19.7 kilometers per day in 2023-24, setting a global benchmark. This rapid progress reflects the government’s commitment to sustainable transportation and economic efficiency.

Switching from diesel to electric traction reduces operational costs by about 70% while significantly lowering carbon emissions. Electrification aligns with Indian Railways’ ambition to become a global leader in “Green Railways”, targeting net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Power Reliability and Resilience

Ensuring uninterrupted power for electric trains is a critical priority. The network integrates multiple safeguards, including robust connections to the national grid and redundant power sources at substations, ensuring smooth and reliable operations.The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is spearheading the electrification of remaining Broad Gauge routes in its jurisdiction, enhancing connectivity while advancing the railway’s environmental objectives. This effort is a vital step toward achieving 100% electrification and supporting India’s transition to sustainable mobility.
