DEWA employees in between October 2022 and December 2023, in Dubai recycled a total of 499,541 plastic bottles and aluminum cans, preventing 7,108 kilograms of waste from being dumped in landfill.
DEWA has installed smart machines in some buildings to encourage recycling. The machines are operated by DEWA’s Smart Office app, allowing workers to scan QR codes and receive points for each recycling activity. These points can be used to enter monthly drawings for valuable prizes. DEWA recognized and rewarded 49 employees as of the end of 2023.
These recycling efforts are aligned with the UAE’s Circular Economy Policy and the DEWA Circular Economy Strategy, which focuses on optimizing resource use and creating social, economic and environmental benefits. DEWA’s measures aim to promote sustainable practices such as recycling and waste reduction. Additionally, these efforts support the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2021-2041, which emphasizes innovation in waste management, recycling and energy conversion while providing environmentally sound solutions.
DEWA also conducted 13 employee awareness programs highlighting the importance of responsible practices and sustainable living. The scheme encourages employees to use good practice at home and at work, including being more efficient in their use of electricity and water, reducing waste, reducing plastic consumption and encouraging the reuse and recycling of plastic bottles and cans.
