Tata’s ₹27,000-Crore Chip Assembly Plant In Assam To Start Operations In 2025, Says Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran

Tata Electronics’ ₹27,000-crore chip assembly plant in Assam, set to start operations in 2025, will create 27,000 jobs, announced Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran on Saturday.

At the Bhumi Pujan ceremony for the chip plant, Chandrasekaran noted that Tata Electronics has already hired 1,000 people from Assam and plans to attract a full range of semiconductor ecosystem companies as the facility grows. “At its capacity it will employ 27,000 people, 15,000 direct jobs and additional 12,000 indirect jobs. We want to move fast. We are trying to accelerate the building of this factory. We hope sometime in 2025 we will be able to complete this facility and quickly start operations,” Chandrasekaran said.

The Tata semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad is set to be India’s first indigenous semiconductor assembly and test plant.

Expected to create over 27,000 direct and indirect jobs, the facility is scheduled to be operational by mid-2025. Its strategic location offers access to ample water, green power, and is close to existing semiconductor packaging and test hubs in Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore.

During the Bhumi Pujan ceremony, both Sarma and Chandrasekaran participated in rituals while priests chanted hymns from various regions of the country.

During the ceremony, the chief minister unveiled a 3-D model of the semiconductor assembly and test facility.

”Look forward to being in Jagiroad shortly and initialise work on the semiconductor facility by performing the Bhumi pujan of the plant,” Sarma had earlier posted on X.

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) in another post on X said, ”Today is a historic day for Assam as HCM Dr@himantabiswa will perform the Bhumi pujan of the Tata Semiconductor Assembly and test facility at Jagiroad”.

”Once operational, it will transform the industrial landscape of Assam and herald a new era of growth”, the CMO said. On March 13 this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually laid the foundation stone for the facility.

“Tata Group is proud to spearhead the advanced electronics ecosystem in India under the visionary leadership of Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The innovation driven industry will propel Assam in the global electronics global supply chain ecosystem. Tata Group has strong ties with Assam and 60,000 employees of the Group are working here in various industries,” said  Chairman Tata Sons, N Chandrasekaran.

He also extended Ratan Tata’s best wishes to the residents of Assam on this significant occasion. Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran expressed gratitude to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Ashwani Vaishnav for accelerating the project. He highlighted that the facility will create 27,000 job opportunities and open extensive avenues for developing a future-ready and knowledge-based electronics value chain.

The Tata Electronics greenfield project in Jagiroad, involving a ₹27,000 crore investment, is set to create over 30,000 jobs. The first phase of the facility is expected to start operations by mid-2025.

The facility will focus on three key platform technologies: wire bond, flip chip, and a unique integrated systems packaging (ISP) offering, with plans to expand into advanced packaging technologies in the future.

Semiconductor assembly and testing is a crucial part of the value chain where wafers from semiconductor fabs are assembled, packaged, and tested before being used in end products.

The new facility aims to meet the rising global demand in key markets such as AI, industrial, and consumer electronics. It is expected to significantly boost industrialization in North-East India and is aligned with the Centre’s semiconductor policy driven by the India Semiconductor Mission and the Assam government’s electronics policy.
