The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to cancel class 10 and 12 board examinations amid the novel coronavirus- Covid-19, providing relief to lakhs of students.

In a big news impacting lakhs of students the CBSE today informed that apex court that the remaining board exams for class 10 and 12 that were scheduled to take place from July 1 stand cancelled. Solicitor general appearing for CBSE said that Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Delhi have expressed inability to conduct board exams.

The Supreme Court asked the CBSE to give clarity on whether it will give students the option to appear for exams later or will declare results on the basis of internal assessment marks. The CBSE for now said that exams which were due to begin for July stand cancelled for and the board will conduct exams for class 12 when they feel the condition is conducive.

SG Tushar Mehta told the apex court that the exams for class 10 have been called while class 12 students are likely to be given an option to take be scored no basis of internal assessment or take exams when situation allows.

Meanwhile, taking a cue from CBSE, the council for Indian school certificate examinations has cancelled the pending ICSE and ISC exams. ICSE also informed the top court of their decision to not hold the pending exams. The top court also sought clarity on the when the new academic year would begin. The CBSE is expected to file a detailed reply to the apex court tomorrow when the hearing resumes.

The apex court was hearing a plea filed by parents of students who wanted a stay on board exams, in their plea the parents claimed that coronavirus could spread further if students took exams in such close proximity. Though the petitioner also demanded the Supreme Court take a decision to halt entrance exams as well for the time being, the apex court refused to deal with the issue at this stage
