‘Thangalaan’, one of the biggest films of year, opened in theatres on Thursday (August 15) amid much fanfare. The period actioner had created a fair deal of buzz among fans prior to its release with its intense trailer and striking visuals.
This has helped it secure a good start at the Tamil Nadu box office as per the initial estimates.
Vikram’s ‘Thangalaan’ Off To A Good Start In Tamil Nadu
‘Thangalaan’, starring Chiyaan Vikram and Malavika Mohanan, hit screens on August 15 and opened to a good response at the Tamil Nadu box office. According to Ramesh Bala, a trade analyst, Thangalaan is expected to gross between Rs 10 crore and Rs 12 crore on its first day.
“I am assuming it will do between Rs 10 crore and 12 crore on the first day. The figure could have been higher had it been a solo release. We also have Demonte Colony 2 this week,” he told NewsX.
If this estimate holds, ‘Thangalaan’ will not be able to beat ‘Indian 2’. The Kamal Haasan-starrer had raked in Rs 13 crore on day 1 when it released last month.
‘Thangalaan’ is likely to put up good numbers over the extended weekend given Vikram’s star power. It, however, remains to be seen whether is able to hold its own over the weekend given the mixed word of mouth.

What’s ‘Thangalaan’ About?
Vikram’s ‘Thangalaan, directed by Pa Ranjith, ’ is billed as a hard-hitting historical action drama that revolves around a villager who rises against the British when they try to seize his plot of gold. It features Malavika Mohanan and Parvathy as the leading ladies.
The supporting cast includes Pasupathy, Daniel Caltagirone, and Arjun Anbudan. The music is composed by GV Prakash Kumar. A Kishor Kumar and Selva RK are its the cinematographer and editor respectively. The team shot major portions of Thangalaan in cities such as Chennai and Madurai.
It hit screens on August 15 and is currently playing in theatres. This is Vikram’s first release after the 2022 epic drama ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’.
