Cartoon Network Website Shuts Down After 26 Years: Here’s How To Keep Watching Your Favorite Shows

After 26 years of being a digital destination for fans, the Cartoon Network website officially went offline on August 8, 2024. Launched in July 1998, the website had been a popular hub for beloved shows like Teen Titans Go!, The Powerpuff Girls, Adventure Time, and Steven Universe. However, users visiting the site are now redirected to Max, Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming platform, where many of these shows are available for streaming.

A message on the Max website welcomes visitors, directing them to the platform’s collection of Cartoon Network episodes. The pop-up reads, “Looking for episodes of your favourite Cartoon Network shows? Check out what’s available to stream on Max (subscription required).” It also encourages current cable subscribers to continue enjoying Cartoon Network programming through their televisions and connected apps, or to sign up for Max, where they can create a Kids Profile with added privacy protections to ensure a child-friendly experience.

A Cartoon Network spokesperson explained the decision to shut down the website, stating, “We are focusing on the Cartoon Network shows and social media where we find consumers are the most engaged and there is a meaningful potential for growth.” Despite the website’s closure, the network will continue to air 11 hours of content daily, from 6 am to 5 pm, ensuring that fans can still enjoy their favorite shows on television.

The shutdown of CartoonNetwork.com appears to be part of a broader strategy amid the intense competition in the streaming landscape. This move mirrors other recent closures by major media companies; for instance, Paramount Global removed the websites for Comedy Central, MTV News, and CMT in June, and in February, they also discontinued the preschool-focused channel Noggin.

While the Cartoon Network website’s closure marks the end of an era, the channel itself is adapting to the evolving media environment. New programming is in development, including spin-offs of popular shows, ensuring that Cartoon Network remains a significant presence in the world of entertainment. Last month, social media was abuzz with rumors that Cartoon Network was shutting down entirely, with #RIPCartoonNetwork trending on X (formerly Twitter). However, these rumors were quickly debunked, and the channel continues to thrive, albeit with a shift in how it reaches its audience.
