Disney has revealed a fresh image for the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2016 movie Moana. The picture, shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, early Wednesday, depicts the now-older titular princess confidently sailing with an oar in hand. While many details about Moana 2 remain undisclosed, it is scheduled to premiere in theaters this November.
Disney unveils a fresh image for Moana 2
The most recent image for the forthcoming sequel to the animated film was revealed during Disney’s 2024 annual shareholders meeting. Initially, the company had contemplated reintroducing Moana to audiences through a TV series on Disney+. However, Disney altered its plans and announced a second film in February.

Directed by Dave Derrick Jr., Moana 2 will showcase music from Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina. Scheduled for release on November 27, the film was initially introduced with the description, “Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers.”
“After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced,” the description added.
Confirmation of Dwayne Johnson’s return
In addition to the release of the new image, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s return has been officially confirmed. Disney CEO Bob Iger announced during the meeting that the WWE star, along with Auli’i Cravalho, will be returning to portray their roles as Maui and Moana, respectively, in Moana 2. However, Johnson will also be portraying Maui in the live-action adaptation of the film, alongside another actress who will take on the role of Moana.
