Gulshan Devaiah On Professional Regrets: There Are A Few Things You Wish…| Exclusive

Gulshan Devaiah plays a key role in the Janhvi Kapoor-led ‘Ulajh’, which opened in theatres on Friday (August 2). The film centres on an Indian Foreign Services ( IFS) officer who deals with a major conspiracy while on an assignment. Gulshan’s character in particular has piqued the curiosity of fans.

In an exclusive interview with NewsX, the actor praised Janhvi and said she is extremely hardworking. He also opened up about his career and professional regrets.

Edited excerpts from the interview:

What made you take up ‘Ulajh’?

I liked the part offered to me. I also felt this project would be good for my career. Then, I was excited about the fact that I would work with a plethora of talented actors. Additionally, we were shooting in London. I liked the director’s vision as well. Then, of course, it was a theatrical release. There is a special place in my heart for theatrical releases.

How was the experience of working with Janhvi?

She is very hardworking. I have tremendous respect for those who are hardworking and dedicated to the craft. I am laid back in life and find inspiration in such people. Janhvi was very hardworking during the rehearsals and the shoot.

How did you prepare for the role?

I had sessions with the director. He has a vision and I had some ideas of my own. Mostly, it was all about the imagination. At times, you also need to learn a skill. My preparation involves thinking about the role and understanding the director’s vision. In pre-productions, we try to build a strong foundation.

Did you have any disagreements with the director Sudhanshu Saria over creative matters?

There is always such a point. All creative people can’t think the same. It is always good to have some creative friction. I often push in one direction and the director pushes in another. I don’t believe that I have figured everything out.

Are there any similarities between you and the character?

There are always some similarities. For some characters, you look inward. In other cases, you look outward and rely on the imagination.

Lastly, do you have any professional regrets?

Nothing such as but then there are a few things that you wish had turned out better. However, you cannot control everything. It’s not up to one person to make a film. There’s a team involved.
