Kritika Kamra On Playing A Cop In ‘Gyaarah Gyaarah’: The Uniform Comes With A Sense Of Responsibility And Pride | Exclusive

Kritika Kamra recently impressed fans with her performance in the web series ‘Gyaarah Gyaarah’, which premiered on Zee5 on August 9. The fantasy-thriller series features her in the role of a cop and has piqued the curiosity of the audience with its intriguing plot.

Speaking exclusively to NewsX, Kritika opened up about donning the uniform for ‘Gyaarah Gyaarah’ and preparing for the part. She also revealed that she is open to working extensively in Bollywood but needs a meaningful part.

Edited excerpts from the interview:

What made you give the nod to ‘Gyaarah Gyaarah’?

I thought the concept was unique. It truly was something that hasn’t been explored in cinema or web series too frequently. It is a police procedural with a twist. As the name suggests, it’s about two walkie-talkies connecting mysteriously at 11:11. One is in 1990 and the other is in 2016. I am constantly looking for such new genres to be part of.

How did you prepare for the part of a cop?

This came on the heels of me playing a gangster. As such, there was a total shift in psychology. Luckily for me, the uniform did a lot of the job. It transforms you and you start walking upright. It comes with a sense of responsibility and pride. I spoke to female cops and observed people.

Then, I also watched videos of cops in UP and Haryana. This gave me an idea of how what direction I wanted to take Vamika in. There’s a complex internal life that she has. She is in both timelines. I am playing a young and hopeful officer, who is trying to find her feet, in the past. And, then, she is a confident officer in the present. I had to bring out that contrast through subtle changes.,

Are there any similarities between you and Vamika, your character?

I want to imbibe her perseverance. She doesn’t give up. Every time she hits a dead end, she begins fresh. I want to imbibe that quality.

You have become synonymous with strong characters on OTT and TV.

The selection process is quite instinctive for an actor. I am inherently attracted to headstrong female characters. I look for opportunities to play modern and independent women. For long, we haven’t had such representation of women characters on TV. Now, because of streaming, we have some such characters and even in films things have improved.

How did acting happen?

It was a happy accident. I was outside my college when I got called in for an audition. I knew nothing about acting. I never thought that this was a viable option. However, they called me and said that they lkied my audition and then I shifted to Mumbai. I remember to being mesmirisded by the process of filmmaking and soon knew this is where I belonged.

Why have you not worked extensively in Bollywood so far?

I am drawn to certain parts and by that I don’t mean certain genres. I would love to do a progressive love story. However, the kind of stuff I do is happening more on streaming. I would love to do a film and some have come my way but they have to be the right kind. I won’t do a film just for the heck of it.
