Ryan Reynolds & Blake Lively Break Box Office Records As First Married Couple To Top US Charts In 30 Years

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively top the US box office, becoming the first married couple in 34 years to achieve this feat simultaneously.

Ryan Reynolds & Blake Lively Break Box Office Records As First Married Couple To Top US Charts In 30 Years
In a rare feat for Hollywood, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have both claimed the top spots at the US box office, marking the first time in 34 years that a married couple has achieved such success simultaneously. Reynolds’ latest Marvel blockbuster, Deadpool & Wolverine, continued to dominate theaters, raking in $54.2 million over the weekend and pushing its global earnings past the $1 billion mark. Meanwhile, Lively’s romantic drama It Ends With Us made an impressive debut, earning $50 million domestically.

This cinematic power couple’s success is being compared to a modern-day “Barbenheimer,” with both movies appealing to different audiences yet thriving together. This phenomenon mirrors a similar event from 1990 when Bruce Willis’ Die Hard 2 and Demi Moore’s Ghost led the box office.

Not all films fared as well, though. Borderlands, a $120 million video game adaptation directed by Eli Roth, flopped with only $8.8 million in its opening weekend. Despite starring notable actors like Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black, the film faced significant delays and reshoots since it was filmed in 2021 and was met with poor reviews, scoring only 10% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Deadpool & Wolverine, co-starring Hugh Jackman, continues to break records, becoming only the second R-rated film to cross the $1 billion mark, after 2019’s Joker. With its continued success, it is now one of the highest-grossing Marvel films of all time.

Blake Lively, who made a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, stars in and produced It Ends With Us, based on the bestselling novel by Colleen Hoover. The film, which cost $25 million to produce, follows the story of Lily Bloom, a Boston florist navigating complex romantic relationships. The film’s strong performance, combined with positive audience reception, suggests it could continue to do well during the slower August box office period.

Reynolds and Lively have even embraced the friendly competition between their films, with Reynolds playfully engaging in promotional content that highlights their dual successes. For Lively, this strategy paid off, as It Ends With Us exceeded early box office predictions by a significant margin.

The weekend box office numbers were as follows:

  1. Deadpool & Wolverine: $54.2 million
  2. It Ends With Us: $50 million
  3. Twisters: $15 million
  4. Borderlands: $8.8 million
  5. Despicable Me 4: $8 million
  6. Trap: $6.7 million
  7. Inside Out 2: $5 million
  8. Harold and the Purple Crayon: $3.1 million
  9. Cuckoo: $3 million
  10. Longlegs: $2 million

This remarkable achievement by Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively not only highlights their individual talents but also cements their status as one of Hollywood’s most powerful couples.
