Security Beefed Up For Oscars 2024 To Prevent Potential Protests Over Israel-Hamas War

In anticipation of potential protests related to the Israel-Hamas war during the Oscars, the Los Angeles Police Department plans to increase its presence on Sunday night to prevent disruptions to the ceremony. The police have received information, partly from social media posts, indicating that at least one group aims to obstruct the Academy Awards.

Commander Randy Goddard emphasized the police’s goal to ensure the event’s success while respecting protesters’ First Amendment rights. Some groups may attempt to disrupt traffic, while others might protest closer to the Dolby Theater, the Oscars venue.

The police will allocate additional resources to facilitate peaceful protests and maintain safety, with a focus on allowing guests to arrive securely. Despite concerns about potential disruptions, the Dolby Theater has security measures in place, including railings, fencing, checkpoints, and almost 2,000 private security guards.

The heightened security measures follow recent pro-Palestinian protests during the Grammys, where demonstrators blocked traffic outside Crypto.com Arena. The 96th Oscars, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will feature presenters such as Zendaya, Al Pacino, Jennifer Lawrence, Steven Spielberg, and others.

The war in Ukraine and the ongoing presidential election may also be discussed during the ceremony.
