Shakira has discussed her experience as a single mother during her most recent interview. The Colombian singer shared insights into how living apart from Barcelona has positively impacted her life. Shakira delved into family dynamics, particularly with her two sons – Milan and Sasha – following her split from their father, former Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué, after an 11-year relationship that ended in 2022.
Reflecting on her newfound independence, Shakira expressed, “In some ways, not having a husband is liberating because I can’t explain it, but it was holding me back. Now, I feel a renewed drive to work, to write songs, to create music. It’s become a compulsion for me, something I didn’t feel before.”

Shakira’s upcoming album, “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” (Women Don’t Cry Anymore), will be released on March 22, marking her first album launch in seven years. Following their separation announcement in June 2022, Shakira and Gerard relocated from their Barcelona residence to Miami, USA, with their sons. Shakira also shared insights into how she navigated discussions about the separation with her children.
During the interview, Shakira emphasized the importance of honesty with children, stating, “There were numerous lessons in that entire experience. As you mentioned, society often advises concealing emotions from our children. However, I believe that’s a mistake because they are perceptive and interpret things in various ways. It takes courage to address topics openly with them, to understand their perceptions of reality. Engage in conversation, encourage dialogue where they can express their thoughts, and embrace their vulnerability.” She further emphasized that children can discern when adults are not truthful and simply want honesty.
The former couple, who were together for over 11 years and welcomed two sons, announced their split in June 2022, marking the end of their relationship.
