Sharda Sinha, Padma Bhushan Awarded Folk Singer Passes Away at 72

Sharda Sinha, a name synonymous with Bhojpuri folk music and the festive melodies of Chhath Puja, passed away on November 5 in New Delhi. The beloved folk icon and Padma Bhushan awardee had been admitted to AIIMS Hospital since October 27, undergoing treatment for prolonged health complications. Her son, Anshuman Sinha, confirmed her passing on Instagram, marking a somber moment for millions of her fans.

Amid the difficult news, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Sharda Sinha’s family, speaking with her son to check on her health. This gesture underscored the immense respect and love that the nation holds for the folk singer who, for decades, had brought the culture and spirit of Bihar to life through her music.

Anshuman Sinha, in a heartfelt Instagram post, shared the tragic news along with a photograph of his mother, stating, “Your prayers and love will always remain with my mother. Chhathi Maiya has called her to herself. She is no longer with us in physical form.”

Sharda Sinha’s contribution to Bhojpuri and Maithili folk music is unparalleled. Her songs, particularly those dedicated to Chhath Puja, are an intrinsic part of the festival for many. Her iconic voice, deeply rooted in the cultural essence of Bihar, has made her a beloved figure not only in the state but across India. She has been celebrated with several honors, including the Padma Bhushan in 2018, recognizing her immense contributions to Indian folk music.

Her songs such as “Ho Dinanath,” “Pahile Pahil Chhathi Maiya,” and “Chhath Ke Baratiya” are classics that have transcended generations, bringing warmth, nostalgia, and a sense of home to Biharis worldwide. Her voice was more than music; it was a link to tradition, family, and the purity of faith.
