‘Squid Game’ Actor Oh Yeong-su Found Guilty of Sexual Misconduct, Gets 8-month Suspended Sentence

Veteran actor Oh Yeong-su, best known for his work on the global hit ‘Squid Game’, has been convicted of sexual misconduct as per a statement issued by a court on Friday, March 15. He was reportedly found guilty of assaulting/ behaving inappropriately with  a woman in 2017.

According to a news agency, Oh Yeong-su has been handed an eight-month prison sentence suspended for two years. He has also been asked to attend 40 hours of classes on sexual violence.

During the trial, the judge pointed out that the surviour’s accounts seemed ‘genuine’ and came across as a reflection of actual experiences. 

In 2022, Oh Yeong-su was formally charged for assaulting a woman on two occasions in 2017.  These incidents occurred when he was in a rural area for a theatre performance. 

Oh Yeong-su began his acting career in 1963 as part of a theatre crew called ‘The Square’. He worked closely with Jang Min-ho and considers him to be his mentor. He emerged as a force to reckon with in theatre with his work in productions such as ‘A Confession for a Black Prostitute’, ‘The Merchant of Venice’, and ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’. He also starred in adaptations of ‘King Lear’. 

Oh Yeong-su played monks in several films and TV shows before gaining global recognition with Squid Game. The survival-thriller series featured him as a seemingly naïve old man who takes on his ‘rivals’ in a series of games to determine the ultimate winner/ survivor. Fans later learn that he has a dark secret. 

‘Squid Game’ received over 111 million views in the first month after its premiere in 2021. Its second season is in the works at Netflix.
