Actors Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher have decided to end their relationship after nearly 14 years of marriage and 20 years of knowing each other. In a joint statement posted to Instagram on April 5, 2023, the couple announced that they were separating and filing for divorce. “After a long match lasting more than two decades, we are finally laying down our racquets,” they said, adding, “In 2023 we jointly filed to terminate our marriage.”
The former couple added that they had always prioritized privacy in their relationship and had been quietly working through the separation process. They expressed their continued devotion to and love for their children, and kindly asked for privacy during this time. “We have always prioritized our privacy, and have been quietly working through this change. We forever share in our devotion and love for our children. We sincerely appreciate your respecting our family’s wish for privacy,” said the duo.
Fisher, 48, and Baron Cohen, 52, were married on March 15, 2010 and have three children together. Earlier this week, Fisher was photographed enjoying a “girls night at the theater” with friends Naomi Watts, Michelle Dockery and producer Bruna Papandrea in London.
Baron Cohen and Fisher first connected at a party in Sydney in 2001, before either achieved major fame in Hollywood. Fisher has said that they bonded over making fun of pretentious partygoers. “She was hilarious. We were at a very pretentious party, and me and her bonded over taking the mick out of the other people in the party,” Baron Cohen recalled adding, “I knew instantly. I don’t know if she did.” The two became engaged in 2004 and welcomed their first child three years later.
While Fisher has been hesitant to publicly discuss details of their private life, she once shared that keeping their relationship out of the public eye had been valuable to her. She said that finding humour in life’s difficulties had always connected them.
Isla Lang Fisher was born on February 3, 1976, in Muscat, Oman to Scottish parents Elspeth Reid and Brian Fisher. Her father worked as a banker for the United Nations at the time. When Fisher was six years old, she moved with her family back to their hometown of Bathgate in Scotland before eventually settling in Perth, Australia.
In 2002, Fisher transitioned to Hollywood by playing the love interest of Shaggy Rogers in the live-action Scooby-Doo film. Her breakthrough role came in 2005’s comedy Wedding Crashers, where she portrayed the seemingly promiscuous younger daughter of a politician who falls for an irresponsible wedding crasher played by Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson.
Fisher got her first leading role in the 2009 comedy Confessions of a Shopaholic, in which she played a college graduate working as a financial journalist in New York City to support her shopping addiction. She gained mainstream fame in 2013 with roles in two highly successful films – The Great Gatsby and Now You See Me.
