Why Did Angelina Jolie Go Barefoot In Her First Appearance On The Tonight Show After A Decade?

Angelina Jolie made a rare talk show appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on December 5, marking her first in a decade. While promoting her role as Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín’s film Maria, Jolie surprised viewers by walking on stage without shoes.

Fallon immediately commented, asking, “Did you forget your shoes?” Jolie explained, “I broke my toe yesterday. I tried to find a comfortable shoe, but I just decided not to wear any.”

During the interview, Jolie admitted she rarely participates in public television interviews due to nervousness. “I get very uncomfortable, and I haven’t done one for, like, a decade. This is so not my thing,” she shared.

Jolie also opened up about her six children—Maddox (23), Pax (21), Zahara (19), Shiloh (18), and twins Knox and Vivienne (16)—and their thoughts on entering the entertainment industry. While some are interested in behind-the-scenes roles, she noted that her daughter Shiloh, in particular, values privacy.

“She especially wants to be private — not photographed, not in the spotlight,” Jolie said, acknowledging the unique challenges her children face growing up with famous parents.

Fallon brought up Jolie’s unexpected backup career choice: funeral directing. When asked if it was true, Jolie confirmed, “Yes. Doesn’t it make sense though?”

She explained that her interest stemmed from the passing of her grandfather. “I remember thinking this isn’t how it should be. It should be a celebration of life. I’m comfortable with death, and I thought, ‘This could be a meaningful career path.’”

Jolie jokingly referred to it as her “fallback career” and has previously spoken about this aspiration, including in a 2021 60 Minutes interview. “If acting didn’t work out, that was going to be my plan,” she said.

Jolie’s candid and lighthearted conversation with Fallon offered fans a rare glimpse into her personal life, her family, and even her unconventional career interests.
