Following recent speculation surrounding Alia Bhatt’s potential involvement in Gurinder Chadha’s Disney musical centered on an Indian princess, the filmmaker has addressed the rumours. Taking to Twitter on Saturday, April 6 the director responded to a headline claiming that Alia Bhatt was set to star in her next project backed by Disney.
Using capital letters to emphasize her point, the filmmaker tweeted alongside the article, “This is not true. Not sure where this started. The script is still in the works. Alia and I had a meeting about another project and I attended her charity gala recently.” Gurinder Chadha, renowned for films like “Bend It Like Beckham” (2002) and “Bride and Prejudice” (2004), has been enlisted by Disney to direct an original musical featuring an Indian princess.
According to a recent report by an Indian publication, discussions were underway between Alia and Gurinder regarding the Disney project. The report stated that Alia and Gurinder met in January this year, during the filmmaker’s visit to India for actor Aamir Khan’s daughter Ira Khan’s wedding to Nupur Shikhare. A source revealed, “Alia and Gurinder have been in discussions for some time. Final casting decisions will be made once the script is finalized, but Alia is among the top contenders.”
The source further added, “After portraying a singer in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama and an undercover agent in Shiv Rawail’s film, portraying a Disney princess would be a significant addition to Alia’s repertoire. Leading a major international project would also be a step towards establishing her presence in Hollywood following ‘Heart of Stone.’ If everything falls into place, she will commence work with Gurinder in the latter half of 2025.” Speculation increased when Gurinder attended the actor’s Hope Gala in London last month, where Alia was seen posing with her on the red carpet.
