Arvind Otta’s remarkable work for people affected by mental health and for their human rights

Mental well-being plays an important role in maintaining our health. Unfortunately, despite recent efforts to raise awareness, it is often ignored. Stigma regarding mental health is a challenge for us. Conditions such as depression and anxiety affect millions of individuals but the stigma and discrimination associated with these issues act as formidable barriers to receiving appropriate treatment.

Dr. Arvind Otta’s influential contributions have brought about a paradigm shift in the mental health landscape in India. Their unwavering dedication to dismantling the barriers that hinder individuals with health concerns, from accessing assistance and support is commendable. Through their campaign they have effectively demonstrated that mental well being is a component of ones general health and deserves equal rights and respect as any other aspect of human wellness.

Dr. Arvind Otta emphasized in a Mental Health program in Delhi, “violation of human rights of people suffering from severe mental health problems like schizophrenia and dissociative identity disorder is also a big problem, the main reason is ignorance, which can be reduced to a great extent by awareness. One of the factors contributing to violations is the use of physical restraints and seclusion. These measures are often employed to control and manage the behaviour of patients, but it can cause injury, trauma, and psychological distress. It is clear that the use of restraints and solitary confinement is contrary to the rights of cruel free, human and treatment with dignity”.

Lack of appropriate and effective treatment is a sign of human rights violation in mental health care. People with Psychological illness are often encounter to inferior care that worsen their conditions. It lead to a cycle of poor mental health, repeated hospitalization, and a lack of progress in recovery. The lack of access to appropriate and effective treatment is also violation of the rights to health and the rights to adequate standard of living.

Arvind Otta is supervising an awareness project called UTSAAH to raise awareness about the issue and to work towards improving mental health care in India. In this project, he is conducted more than 200 public meetings to educate people about mental health and still moving. College Students are getting training through workshops, speeches to identify person with mental illness and to protect rights of people facing mental health conditions. He mentioned that patients suffering from mental health issues, especially the poor, are often subjected to abuse and neglect, leading to violation of their basic rights.

The issue around the violation to basic human rights is a significant concern and is often overlooked and ignored upon in society today. Mental health patients are the most vulnerable individuals in society, that are repeatedly subjected to inhumane treatment, neglect and abuse, leaving a devastating impact on their mental wellbeing.  Being subjected to discrimination, stigma, and social exclusion, it prevents them from getting the right support and resources needed for recovery.

Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness in such instances can increase. As a result, issues around stigma and discrimination surrounding mental health conditions potentially violate the right to equality and non-discrimination. Dr Arvind Otta works with many advocacy groups, human rights organizations, government agencies that ensure mental health patients are treated fairly and with dignity.

Mental health care can be expensive and difficult to access, especially for people in low-income and rural communities. Dr Arvind Otta is working to raise awareness about this issue, and to advocate for policies that improve access to mental health care for everyone, regardless of income or location.
