DMDK Leader Vijayakanth Lost Battle against Covid-19 at 71

Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) founder and acclaimed actor Vijayakanth, known as ‘Captain,’ passed away in Chennai at the age of 71 after testing positive for Covid-19 on Thursday. Earlier in the day, the party revealed through its official X handle that Vijayakanth had been admitted to a hospital and put on ventilator support due to breathing difficulties.

Vijayakanth’s illustrious career began in the Tamil film industry, where he featured in 154 movies before transitioning to politics. His leadership at Nadigar Sangam (South Indian Artistes’ Association) brought significant changes to the industry. In 2005, he founded the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam.

Despite initial challenges, the DMDK gained prominence in the 2011 elections when it contested in alliance with the AIADMK, winning 26 out of 41 constituencies. Vijayakanth served as the leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly from 2011 to 2016.

However, differences with the AIADMK led to a breakup, resulting in resignations and the loss of main Opposition party status for the DMDK. Vijayakanth, a two-time Member of the Legislative Assembly, represented the Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam constituencies.

In subsequent elections, including 2016, 2019, and 2021, the DMDK faced challenges as Vijayakanth battled health complications. The veteran actor and politician’s contributions to both cinema and politics have left an indelible mark on the cultural and political landscape of Tamil Nadu. His demise is mourned by his supporters and the entertainment industry alike.
