Tips To Beat The Heat: Staying Hydrated And Protected

As temperatures soar in several states across India, the Union Health Ministry has recently issued a set of guidelines aimed at preventing heat-related illnesses.

Among the precautions recommended to combat the heat, the guidelines emphasize the importance of caring for the elderly or sick individuals living alone. It is advised to keep homes cool by using curtains, shutters, or sunshades during the day and opening windows at night for ventilation. Additionally, people are encouraged to stay on lower floors during the day and utilize fans and damp cloths to cool the body down.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning regarding heatwaves and “extreme heat” expected between April and May. Heatwaves can lead to increased dehydration, resulting in excessive fluid loss and sweating.

“If not addressed promptly, dehydration can lead to various health complications, including heat exhaustion and heatstroke, which can be fatal and may require hospitalization. Severe dehydration can also contribute to kidney disease,” explains a medical professional.

To prevent heat-related ailments such as sunburn and heat rash, doctors advise prioritizing hydration. Even if one does not feel thirsty, it is crucial to carry a water bottle and drink water when going outdoors.

Furthermore, it is recommended to avoid sun exposure and opt for comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.

“Stay vigilant for signs of heat-related disorders, such as lightheadedness, dizziness, or warm, damp skin, as these could indicate severe heat-related cardiovascular distress. If any of these signs are experienced, seek immediate assistance,” advises another medical professional.

When venturing outdoors in intense heat, especially for extended periods, seeking shade or carrying an umbrella can help prevent overheating and sunburn.

A key tip emphasized is to stay hydrated by drinking more water and utilizing ORS (oral rehydration solution) or other electrolytes to combat dehydration.

“Individuals should prioritize their health and well-being during heatwaves by following these guidelines and being mindful of their hydration and sun protection,” the expert advises.

By adhering to these recommendations, individuals can take proactive steps to safeguard their health and minimize the risks associated with rising temperatures during the upcoming months.
