2 new judges take oath as Supreme Court judges

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud administered the oath of office to two new Supreme Court justices on Monday.

President Droupadi Murmu has signed the warrants of appointment to the Supreme Court of Justices Rajesh Bindal and Aravind Kumar. The new judges were sworn in during a ceremony at the Supreme Court on Monday at 10.30 a.m.

Law Minister Kiren Rijiju took to Twitter on Friday to announce new appointments to the Supreme Court.
Before being appointed to the Supreme Court, Justice Bindal served as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, while Justice Kumar served as Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court.

After the swearing ceremony, the highest court reached its full strength of 34 justices, including the Chief Justice of India, after a nine-month hiatus.

On January 31, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended their names for promotion to the Centre.
Justice Bindal, who was born on April 16, 1961, was scheduled to retire in April of this year at the age of 62, but due to his elevation to the Supreme Court, he now has three additional years in service.

High court justices retire at the age of 62, while Supreme Court judges retire at the age of 65.
Justice Kumar was born on July 14, 1962, and will be 61 years old in 2023.

Last week, five judges took oath as Supreme Court judges after their elevation.
