BSF Hosts 43rd Annual Governing Body Meeting for Tear Smoke Unit

The Border Security Force (BSF) organized the 43rd annual governing body meeting of the Tear Smoke Unit (TSU) in New Delhi on Thursday. Established on May 12, 1976, under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the TSU played a pivotal role in providing domestically produced tear smoke munitions (TSMs), eliminating the nation’s reliance on imported variants for law enforcement.

Chaired by Nitin Agrawal, the Director General of the Border Security Force, the event witnessed the presence of esteemed senior officers representing various organizations, including the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), Defence Research and Development Establishment (DRDE), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Ministry of Home Affairs, Delhi Police, Madhya Pradesh Police, Munitions India Limited, and the Ministry of Finance.

Praising the TSU’s journey, DG BSF Nitin Agrawal lauded its significant role in manufacturing and supplying less-lethal munitions to India’s law enforcement agencies, thereby ensuring the effective maintenance of law and order.

Highlighting the TSU’s specialized proficiency and its unwavering commitment to superior production standards and timely innovation catering to the varied requirements of police forces under diverse conditions, DG BSF underscored the agency’s pivotal role.

During the meeting, the TSU’s vital role in safeguarding human lives and protecting valuable public assets, amounting to millions of rupees, was duly acknowledged. Notably, the TSU’s reputation for manufacturing less-lethal munitions that adhere to global standards was commended, with the agency holding certifications across various ISO standards. Additionally, the TSU recently secured a patent, further solidifying its technological prowess.

TSU boasts an extensive product line comprising lachrymatory munitions, flash-bang munitions, impact munitions, and tailor-made solutions for specialized operations. As part of its ongoing developments, TSU is currently automating its production processes and crafting innovative iterations of lachrymatory munitions.

An impressive milestone for the organization, the Research and Development team at TSU successfully designed a drone tear smoke launcher, intended for the aerial dispersion of tear smoke grenades. This groundbreaking innovation holds the promise of significantly bolstering law and order maintenance initiatives across India.
