Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, is scheduled to appear before the Parliament’s Privileges Committee on Wednesday. This appearance is in relation to his suspension from the Lower House.
At 12.30 pm, the Congress leader will provide his statement before the parliamentary panel.
The suspension motion for Adhir Ranjan was introduced by Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, citing disruptive conduct during the Monsoon Session earlier in the month. Chowdhury was accused of engaging in disruptive behavior while Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union cabinet members were addressing the House.
The Privileges Committee’s agenda included a reference to Chowdhury’s suspension and its investigation. It read, “Oral evidence of Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, MP in connection with motion/resolution adopted by the House on 10 August 2023 leading to his suspension from the service of the House and referring the matter to the Committee of Privileges for further investigation and report to the House.”
The resolution for Chowdhury’s suspension from the Lok Sabha was passed via a voice vote.
The Privileges Committee, headed by BJP MP Sunil Singh from Jharkhand, will review Chowdhury’s statement linked to his suspension. The committee chairman will then submit a report to the House.
Addressing the timeline of the inquiry, Singh remarked, “The committee does not believe in taking maximum days in any case of suspension of MPs in the said matter. It will conduct the inquiry in a time-bound manner and submit the report at the earliest.”
