The Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based surveillance system at Maha Kumbh, implemented by the Yogi-led government, would help to avert congregation accidents. Apart from this, it also avoids a repetition of a tragedy like this year.
With only five days left to the Maha Kumbh, the government has made all possible arrangements to make sure of the safety of the pilgrims. The stampede on 29 January at the ongoing Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj killed at least 30 people and left 90 others injured. This year’s Maha Kumbh witnessed a footfall of a record 60 crore pilgrims.
Yogi-Led Government Implements AI-Based Surveillance System
The ongoing Maha Kumbh has around 2,750 close-circuit cameras monitoring the 4,000-acre Mela ground, in which around 250 are AI-enabled. These cameras feeding information to the Integrated Control and Command Center (ICCC) of the Mela have empowered the authorities to have real-time insights into the crowd density per meter square, as per Mela authorities.
“We will analyze the data of the Mela provided by the AI system once the congregation gets over. We will hopefully be able to revise those thresholds for more effective organization of events of such a scale next time onwards and be better equipped to avert a repetition of a tragedy like this time,” addressed Amit Kumar, SP and in charge of ICCC.
Maha Kumbh Safety And Security Measures
To ensure the security of the pilgrims, there are multiple teams of policemen, comprising nearly 400 personnel, monitoring round-the-clock the CCTV feed from all 25 sectors of the giant mela ground. Moreover, there are giant screens sharing real-time information based on preset algorithms, flash color-coded data, and graphical charts. These are interpreted and passed on to parallel operating radio teams spread over 13 grids.
“They, in turn, pass on the interpreted information to ground teams for necessary action,” Kumar addressed the media. Further, keeping in mind the stampede-like situation, officials confirmed that the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) were revamped following the rush. “The applications of the SOPs are now being done more carefully. The frequency of announcements through our public address system has now been increased. Our announcement pitch is now stronger and more appealing than before,” added Amit Kumar, SP and in charge of ICCC.
