Shortly after the formal dissolution of its alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Tamil Nadu’s principal opposition party, AIADMK, announced its intention to forge new alliances and contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the 2026 State Assembly elections. The decision to sever ties with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was confirmed through a unanimous resolution passed by AIADMK’s office-bearers during a meeting on Monday. The resolution cited grievances against the BJP’s Tamil Nadu leadership for disparaging remarks directed at AIADMK icons, former Chief Ministers Annadurai and Jayalalithaa.
AIADMK’s deputy general secretary, KP Munusamy, emphasized this course of action during an address in Krishnagiri, asserting that the party would independently navigate the upcoming electoral contests.
Sources within the BJP indicated that the central leadership is actively addressing the situation arising from the BJP-AIADMK alliance dissolution. They revealed that a strategic approach has been devised and appropriate measures will be taken. The party is also conducting an assessment of the events leading to the alliance’s separation.
Tamil Nadu BJP leaders, in response to the development, conveyed confidence in the higher echelons of party leadership to address the matter effectively. Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai offered brief remarks, indicating that he would address the issue at a later time.
The decision to part ways with the NDA was reached during a high-level meeting led by AIADMK chief K. Palaniswami at the party’s headquarters. Tensions between the BJP and AIADMK escalated following statements made by Tamil Nadu BJP state president K Annamalai concerning former Chief Minister C. Annadurai and CM J. Jayalalithaa.
While acknowledging the remaining eight months before the elections, BJP leader CT Ravi emphasized the collective duty of party members to strengthen the organization. He commended the efforts led by K Annamalai in fortifying the party’s foundation.
