Arjun Meghwal to move Advocate Amendment Bill in Lok Sabha today

Following the successful passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill, with 454 members expressing their support for the legislation, an official statement has confirmed that Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal is set to introduce the Advocates Amendment Bill, 2023 in the Lok Sabha for deliberation on Thursday.

The Advocates Amendment Bill, 2023, which aims to amend the Advocates Act of 1961 and had previously gained approval in the Rajya Sabha, is poised to bring about significant changes. It entails the repeal of specific provisions from the antiquated Legal Practitioners Act of 1879 and seeks to establish penalties for the offense of ‘Touting.’ Judges will have the authority to release a roster of individuals involved in such activities.

In the bill’s own words, a ‘Tout’ is described as an individual who endeavors to secure the services of a legal practitioner in exchange for remuneration. The bill also empowers the court to prohibit any person whose name is found on the list of touts from entering its premises.

Furthermore, the legislative agenda encompasses discussions on the accomplishments of the Chandrayaan-3 mission and other milestones within the nation’s space sector.

The government’s legislative priorities for this session include reports from several committees, namely the Committee on Estimates, the Standing Committee on Home Affairs, and the Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth, and Sports. Additionally, reports from the standing committees on Transport, Tourism, Culture, and Health and Family Welfare are scheduled for consideration in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

Notably, the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ was the first bill to be passed by the Lok Sabha during this special session, which commenced after the shift to the new Parliament building on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed this legislation as “historic,” emphasizing its potential to further empower women and increase their participation in the political sphere.

The Special Session of Parliament, which commenced on Monday, is set to continue until Friday.
